One of the traditional visits in Madrid is to go shopping at the street markets or flea markets. You can find all sorts of things such as antiques, second-
Madrid has a long tradition of street markets
The products sold are so diverse: food, pieces of clothing, household items, plants, fashion jewellery, etc. These markets have always been widely accepted because they offer, within the same space, a great variety of items and also because prices are lower than at traditional stores.
But the real attractive thing about stepping into one of these markets is just ambling in the open air through the stalls, stopping and looking at all kinds of goods and enjoying the lively bustle of the place as both traders and buyers mix.
The Rastro
Plaza de Cascorro
Zone: Lavapiés-
www: El Rastro
Opening Times: Sundays and public holidays, from 09:00 to 14:00 hours
The street market par excellence in Madrid. Starting at the Plaza de Cascorro, the market runs down the section of road known as the 'Ribera de Curtidores'. Here venders set up tables and booths to promote their wares.
While the market is large and packed with people, do not expect to see a market dominated by antiques. Unfortunately, now much of the Rastro's wares are imported items, leather purses, and textiles; used goods are also plentiful.
Take care with your pockets here!
