The best way to discover Madrid is to tackle it neighbourhood by neighbourhood, because each "barrio" boasts a different personality and history.
From "wild" Malasaña to touristy Puerta del Sol, from the historic Plaza Mayor to the elegant Salamanca District, Madrid holds something for all tastes and interest.
Madrid city center can be broken up in many ways. The division we use here does not follow official partitions so much but areas popularly accepted, each with its own character.
Puerta del Sol, Madrid de los Austrias & La Latina: This area can be considered the heart of Madrid. It is the historical part of the city and most of the monuments are around here.
Gran Via, Chueca & Malasaña: These are the trendiest zones of central Madrid.
Paseo del Prado, Huertas and Atocha: For art and Museums lovers, this is the area. Here you will find the Prado, Thyssen and reina Sofia Museums and other interesting monuments.
El Rastro & Lavapies: The multicultural Madrid
Salamanca & Chamberi: These districts are considered by the Madrid people as the most desirables ones to live in.
